‘Communications Design Department Graduation exhibition’ at Konkuk University

‘Communications Design Department Graduation exhibition’ at Konkuk University

The exhibition that I will introduce today is a graduation exhibition of ‘Communications Design departments’ at Konkuk University. In fact, it wasn't for this project that the first time to go to the exhibit. I happened to visit Konkuk University and saw the exhibit. In fact, I have never seen the graduation exhibition of other schools except for our school graduation. And in fact, I turned up as an exhibition hall to spend time without much hope. However, it seems to be the most absorbed and agonized graduation exhibition I have ever seen. As I only have about two years left before graduation, I could concentrate on the details of display, quality of work, and production methods. I think I saw it when I compared it with my recent graduation exam. Although there were some advantages and disadvantages compared to the exhibition of our department, I will put a positive aspect first as it is the review of this exhibition.

The biggest advantage was that the exhibition hall was so large that each artist had plenty of space. One person was responsible for building a wall, and I felt like they were designing a space as well as a flat display. A total of 56 students displayed the exhibition, using a whole floor of a building that was really much larger than our building.

The picture at left side shows the drawings, the names of the students and the location of the exhibition at the beginning of the exhibition, so you can find the overall composition of the exhibition and the author you have visited at once. In fact, our school's exhibition hall was so small that it was hard to appreciate the exhibits properly, it was hard to see how they were divided into parts at once, and it was really impossible to find the student's work right away. This well-organized and arranged display gave me a sense.

The overall composition of the exhibition also consisted of ‘number eight’ characters, the title of the exhibition. This detailed composition seems to enhance the completeness of the exhibition. They were  also used in the design of the exhibition posters and guide boards to give viewers detailed information. It is a design that makes it easy to see the order of exhibitions that can be difficult.

The most impressive work was this one above. A work which is the theme of City Pop. The video of the song, album cover design, and matching poster designs and hand-designed stickers were installed in a booth. Since taking pictures and designing of album cover is a field that I am interested in, and that is what I want to do in graduation exhibition and finally as a career, I think I have attracted most attention from the moment I saw it.

I found the major of communication design very attractive. Beyond the simple images we make, it seemed cool and wonderful to create a piece of work that would blend sound, video and even pictures. I also wanted to create a package of images, sounds or pictures, not just pictures that produce one-dimensional images. Of course, it may not be easy, but I think there are media and media that are too advanced to see the outcome with just one picture. Even in this exhibition, there were many students using pictures as media, and it seemed very bright when placed as a work in harmony with other media. I also want to create an overall work in which I can visualize the stories and the artist's messages without just thinking about the album cover picture when I am designing my work.

As noted earlier, the availability of sufficient space has also enabled the placement of auditory elements along with visual elements. The sound effect from the back of the viewing position gave a very three-dimensional impression. If given enough space, there would be much more to design, such as location, orientation, or timing of sound. When we think about our digital media part, I think that if we had enough space, there would be even more wonderful works.

The biggest impression of the exhibition was that securing space is really important. It was actually an application that was released in the App Store, and it had enough space for viewers to experience it and for a tablet to have a different description. When I experienced it right away, I was very intuitive, and I felt like downloading it to my cell phone. The audience at the exhibition was already turning into their own consumers. In relation to this, I will explain in the next part.

And what was very impressive was that the graduates' works were directly linked to ‘commercialism’. In fact, even though we're finished celebrating and seeing the exhibits, these graduates really felt connected directly to society, actually creating brands, being commissioned to design packages and designing the right products and lines. Of course we take pictures of our products, but we usually 'assume' it was an advertising photo, but these graduates were already working through graduation exhibitions using their portfolio. There were more students who designed packages and products for real companies than expected.

I think this is something we should really consider. Also, at the end of the exhibition, the products that the students filmed and designed were actually being produced and sold. Of course we sell the exhibit books, but I think it's a very different part. Real spending is immediate, meaning that countless visitors to the exhibition can be potential customers, and that their careers begin right after graduation. Of course, there may be limitations in this area because we are not majoring in design or production, but just as they take pictures and use them as their work, we will be able to create content and items from photographs. There must be a lot of items that can be made, such as posters, cell phone cases, or calendars that use pictures. We should ponder this point and consider the direction of the graduation exhibition development in photography. We have a clear potential to create really cool things.

Looking at the whole exhibition, I learned a much more valuable lesson than I really expected. Rather, there was much more to think about than the typical exhibition, and so much to talk about. Perhaps it was an exhibition that really suited the significance and purpose of the project. A famous writer's exhibition is good, but I think the kind of exhibition that we must see now is a somewhat less refined exhibition created by friends of the same age as me. I could see so many interactive works in this exhibition. As the audience communicated with each other and participated in the work, I felt like making an exhibition. I don't know yet what major I'm going to choose, but if I go to the digital part, I want to deal with one of these works through various media. Of course, even if I go to advertising or genuine parts, I want to work with various media, not limited to pictures.
